For your private relaxation
Located on the sixth floor of a building on Kawaramachi, Cafe Opal might be Kyoto's first youth-oriented cafe and bar, designed and created by young people. Though Cafe Opal opened in November of 1997, the inspiration came from a trip the owner (Mr. Ogawa) and his friends took to London. In a word, they thought London was amazing! More than anything, they were totally amazed by the sheer abundance of youth culture in London. So when they returned home, they immediately started to do their own thing by creating a place for themselves and other young people. Together, they laid the floor tiles, painted the walls, designed the kitchen and sewed the sofa covers. Now nearly two years later, Cafe Opal is a popular place for young people who are proud of their own sense of culture. Here the scene is always changing and forever open to new artistic ideas from its guests.
As you'd expect, Cafe Opal has a giant stereo system and tons of music. Cafe Opal is simply decorated and you immediately feel right at home. It's not huge but its not tiny. Included the sofa and twentyfive chairs, the whole place probably can hold about 40 people at a time.
At night, Cafe Opal serves 5 kinds of wine, 4 kinds of beer (Japanese, American, Jamaican, Dutch). Light meals, including vegetarian dishes some days, are available.
